FOUNDER / DIRECTOR

RACHAEL SAVAGE

For 30 years Rachael Savage has been practicing and creating innovative approaches to help herself and others break free from addiction. First in her work in the twelve step recovery community, creating new meetings and bringing programs into new areas.

Since 2013 she has been at the forefront of the movement to create recovery programs integrating deep mindfulness practices with the proven techniques of the anonymous recovery societies. Rachael was a part of the original national iteration of the Buddhist recovery group, Refuge Recovery, working with the founder and the original board of that community. In 2019, Rachael became one of four Refuge Recovery World Services board members working to adapt international group meetings to the new conditions of the pandemic. As a board director Rachael was instrumental in stabilizing and restoring the Refuge Recovery program through 2021.

Seeking to incorporate AA’s time tested twelve traditions of group service into a non-religious meditation-based recovery program, Rachael with her co-founder Joseph Souhrada, developed the Hungry Ghosts United recovery society in 2021. Rachael’s commitment to her own recovery practice and her creativity and hard work have helped to bring thousands into long term recovery. We are thankful to have her as a guiding force at Hungry Ghosts United.
